The Gig Economy

Today is Memorial Day and many employees are not working. However, 57 million Americans are freelance workers and they may very well be doing work today. They work when they want to and happy to do so. The concept of work based on time is quickly being replaced by project work and compensation based on outcomes. I have been saying it for a long time — the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act is not serving us well. But alas, politicians still want to talk minimum wage nonsense based on a span of time — not on productivity, results or success. By 2027 it is being estimated that the majority of workers will be doing “gig” work, or project work, or freelance work. Someone once said, “find a “gig” you like and you’ll never work a day in your life” or something like that. By the way, Alex Trebek, it is pronounced Gig not Jig.
